Neil Pearlman joined Norrie on a transatlantic call to have a chat about his latest album Refractions which was recently released. Neil has been steeped in Scottish culture and music from childhood and Refractions is an exciting compilation of traditional Scottish and Gaelic songs, reimagined and specially arranged for solo piano. One might imagine a solo instrument may not have the depth and breadth of a band but rest assured Neil uses both hands to play the tune and the accompanying chords with gusto and precision. This album requires a quiet moment with a malt whisky to reflect on not just some quite beautiful but some deep self examination of the Scottish soul. Jazz harmonies challenge our normal interpretation of the tunes but the technical adroitness reassure us thes melodies are in safe hands. Neil has produced an album that demands our attention. You would be mad not to listen
